Are you bringing home more than just turkey leftovers?

For most Canadians, Thanksgiving is a special day, spent with family, looking back over the past 12 months, giving thanks for all that we have received and achieved, both individually and collectively, and sharing hopes and dreams for the year ahead. However, there is one thing you won’t be thankful for…taking bed bugs back to your home post-Thanksgiving celebrations.

Whilst some people can quickly pop over to a nearby family member’s home, for many, it involves planning a long trip and a stayover. Yet, for those of us that must travel from further afield, we may need to break up a long journey with a night in a hotel or roadside motel. Then when we arrive at our loved one’s house, we are pointed in the direction of the guest bedroom or living room futon.

Either way, you are required to sleep in an unfamiliar bed which in truth has had many occupants over the years. This is when we are at the mercy of a less than welcome fellow Thanksgiving guest, Mr Cimex Lectularius, aka a bed bug.

Will you be sleeping alone?

Bed bugs thrive in locations that are frequented by numerous different people for the simple reason that as humans, we offer them the ultimate Thanksgiving dinner. Bed bugs feed almost exclusively on human blood, although they have been known to snack on domestic pets such as cats and dogs too.

Hotel and motel beds host multiple guests each week, and whilst the overwhelming majority will be bed bug-free, the reality is that many are hosts to a family of Cimex Lectularius.

Equally, just because your mother-in-law keeps her home spotless, don’t be lulled into a false sense of security, for even the cleanest homes (or posh hotels) are not immune to housing bed bugs in soft furnishing such as beds, chairs, sofas, plus wall cavities and electrical sockets.

Err, thanks, but no-thanks

But here’s the most worrying aspect. Bed bugs are very adept at hiding away in luggage and heading back home with you post-Thanksgiving, to set up home with you. After nearly two decades of working in pest control in Greater Vancouver and the lower mainland, we can confirm that there is nothing to be thankful for, when a bed bug decides to start a family in your home.

Thanks be to Rio
