It’s always concerning when you suddenly have red, itchy bumps on your skin. And if you suspect it's a bite, but can't spot any bugs in your home, it can be just as frustrating. Plus, the last thing you want is to deal with an infestation.

There are some biting bugs commonly found indoors that could be the reason for your woes. What’s more, there are visible signs to look for to determine which type of pest it could be. That way, you can take preventative measures — especially if you get bitten in your sleep!

 1. Mites:

Mites are microscopic arachnids with eight legs that feed on human skin. They are often transmitted by physical contact with affected humans or pets.

Identifying Mites:

  • Mites are extremely small, resembling tiny white specks of sand.

  • Look for them on dark surfaces or use a dark sheet of paper to detect their movement.

Symptoms of Mite Bites:

  • Rash, inflamed bumps, itchiness, and swelling.

  • Mite bites are often small and may not have a noticeable puncture.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Wash fabrics and bedding in hot water (at least 130°F) to kill mites.

  • Regularly dust and vacuum your home to eliminate mites.

2. Bed Bugs:

Bed bugs are flattened, oval-shaped insects about 5 mm in length that hide during the day and feed on blood at night. They can be found in mattresses, bedding, and other furniture.

Identifying Bed Bugs:

  • Look for rust-colored spots on bedding (indicating bed bug excrement).

  • Adult bed bugs are visible to the naked eye.

Symptoms of Bed Bug Bites:

  • Itchy, inflamed bumps that can appear as red blotches on the skin.

  • Bites may take up to three weeks to develop.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Call Spot On K9 Detection and have Rio, a bed bug detection K9 use her powerful sense of smell to detect any live bed bugs and larvae.

  • If bed bugs are detected, Marcos, her handler, can refer you to a pest control company to effectively eradicate them.

  • Regularly inspect and clean bedding and furniture.

3. Fleas:

Fleas are wingless insects, 2 to 6 mm in length, commonly found in households with pets. They feed on blood and typically enter homes through pets.

Identifying Fleas:

- Fleas can be seen jumping, especially on light-colored surfaces.

Symptoms of Flea Bites:

  • Small, discolored bumps with a central white dot.

  • Bites often appear in clusters on the lower legs.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Regularly treat pets with flea prevention products.

  • Wash pet bedding and vacuum carpets frequently.

4. Mosquitoes:

Mosquitoes are small insects, 2 to 4 mm in size, known for their bites which can transmit diseases. They are most active during humid conditions.

Identifying Mosquito Bites:

  • Raised, swollen welts that appear red and itchy.

Symptoms of Mosquito Bites:

  • Bites may take up to 10 days to heal completely.

  • Usually, bites are not clustered together.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Use mosquito repellents and screens on windows.

  • Eliminate standing water around your home to reduce breeding areas.
